The Mani is the southernmost part of Greece mainland and the least visited by tourists. It's quite a lonely place, very mountainous, rocky and almost devoid of vegetation. Houses are built of stone and ancient towers dot the hillsides from times when clans here engaged in blood feuds. It actually reminds me of the Scottish highlands in a lot of ways, so desolate and treeless and with warring clans. As stark and moonscapish that it is, I love it here. There's mythology here at the southernmost tip of Greece where it's said that the Gates to Hades are located. Cape Teneron is a small fishing village with a lighthouse at the very end of the peninsula., the very southern tip of Greece mainland. The ancient cult site to the Death Oracle of Poseidon is at Cape Teneron. The ride down the coast to the Mani is fantastic beside the mountains and ocean the whole way.Â
