These are videos and photos of important Archaeological sites and Museums in Greece.
This ancient fort isn't easy to find. I was having lunch at a nearby tavern when a local asked me if I knew about it. He showed me where it was across the road and up a nearby hill. I'm glad he did because it is in magnificent condition. This Athenian fort is located on the road between Athens and Delfi and commands a view overlooking a wide plain below Mount Parnassos.
Legend has it that this ancient city was built by the Cyclops, so huge are the walls. It is located south of Corinth and just southeast of Mycenae on the road to Nafplio. Hercules was born here.
This site, like many outside of Athens is free to the public and I always stop here when I'm on the island of Ithaca. They're still occasionally digging here and recently found golden ear rings and a ring which now reside in the Stavros Museum. Of course they've attributed these items to Penelope.
I'm not sure what to say about this site. It's a pyramid which looks like it blew its top off. It's obviously ancient but no one knows how old it is. You just don't run into many pyramids in Greece. This megalithic structure is built with shaped stones fitted together without mortar
This Bronze Age site contains dozens of graves. I was surprised at finding a tholos tomb but here were so many it was hard to comprehend. These are carved from solid rock and date from the time of the Trojan War. The site was discovered in the 1800's while building a road.
Just a few kms From the village of Stavros, this little museum on the island of Ithaca contains the remains of the 13 iron Tripods discovered in the Cave of Loizos at Polis Bay nearby. Also here are a set of gold earrings and matching signet ring discovered at the School of Homer dig site which is also nearby. It used to be free admittance but now costs 2 euros.
Temple of Nemisis
Nemisis was the avenging goddess of Greece.. This is a very well preserved ancient site near Marathon in Greece. A beautiful quiet site in May that is worth a visit overlooking the ocean. I did TaiChi here and meditated in silence for an hour or so.
The Death Oracle
Located at the southernmost tip of mainland Greece is the location where mythology says lies the gates to Hades. This is marked by a shrine to the Death Oracle. A very lonely place where Hell awaits.
This Mycenaean beehive tomb was discovered by Makis Metaxas in 1991 near Poros on the island of Kefalonia. Due to its size, it was obviously for a wealthy noble and Makis believed it was the grave of Odysseus. It's an amazing site!
I've visited this ancient site many times and used a drone this time. The stone staircase ascends up from the courtyard/school to the "castle of Odysseus" on top of the hill. There is still some occasional excavating going on at the site whic is totally open to the public. I love wandering around these ancient Greek sites in May when it's quiet and devoid of tourists.
